England caps with Middlesbrough after Gibson call-up
FootyOn experts look at the nine players who had England caps with Middlesbrough in light of the Ben Gibson call-up.
More than a few cult heroes have played for England during spells with Middlesbrough.
Boro centre back Ben Gibson has been drafted in to the Three Lions squad due to defensive injuries.
That got our experts thinking about other players from The Riverside who had England caps with Middlesbrough.
There are nine in the Premier League era in total, so Gibson will make that a perfect 10 if he gets on in a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on Sunday, March 26.
Who is on the list? Check it out below…
Gareth Southgate (15)
Current Three Lions boss Southgate is a sensible place to start.
Earning 15 England caps with Middlesbrough, the ex-Boro boss and skipper is the one who has brought Gibson onto his roster.
Southgate is an infamous international, for that penalty miss at Euro 96. Here it is again…
Stewart Downing (23)
Teesside native Downing made almost two-thirds of his 35 Three Lions appearances while on Boro’s books the first time around.
With plenty of England caps with Middlesbrough, he will soon turn out for his hometown club for the 300th time.
Downing is a great example for Gibson to follow.
Paul Ince (8)
The Guv’nor himself still got caps after leaving Liverpool for Boro in 1999.
Ince, a powerful, no-nonsense midfielder who had played abroad with Inter Milan, was a real coup for the Teesside team.
He even went to the Euro 2000 finals while on Middlesbrough’s books.
Nick Barmby (8)
After coming through the ranks at Tottenham, Barmby’s England career continued when he signed for Middlesbrough in the summer of 1995.
He only stayed at The Riverside for 17 months before Everton came calling.
Three of Barmby’s four international goals for the Three Lions came while he was at Boro.
Paul Merson (5)
Soccer Saturday pundit Merson saw his fine for Middlesbrough earn him a place in England’s 1998 World Cup squad.
A dozen goals in the old Division One helped Boro return to the Premier League.
This mercurial talent made some mistakes off the field, though.
Paul Gascoigne (3)
Gazza was another coup capture for Middlesbrough after his exploits abroad with Lazio and a successful spell in Scotland at Rangers.
Tears, great goals, big moments. That was his life on the pitch.
A little known fact about Gazza is his first Premier League appearance came in a Boro shirt; it was the old First Division when he played for Newcastle United and Spurs.
Ugo Ehiogu (3)
Centre back Ehiogu’s three England caps with Middlesbrough included his sole international goal against Spain.
That was Sven-Goran Eriksson’s first match in charge of the Three Lions in 2001.
Here’s the highlights…
Jonathan Woodgate (1)
It’s a case of what might have been for Teesside native Woodgate.
The centre back was so highly-rated that Real Madrid signed him.
Injuries not only scuppered his England career, but his time in football in general.
Danny Mills (1)
And the final Premier League player to earn England caps with Middlesbrough was full back Mills.
Loaned to Boro by Leeds United in 2003/04, he made a sole international appearance during his day at The Riverside.
He helped them to lift the League Cup during this stint.
