Played for both Man City and Liverpool
Ahead of their Premier League clash at the Etihad, FootyOn writers pick out six Premier League era footballers to have played for both Man City and Liverpool.
These two clubs have a long and storied history, though the Anfield outfit’s far more successful.
The clubs not only share the scars of previous meetings, but also share past players that have pulled on the colours of each team.
So, with their latest clash impending, we’ve picked out six footballers to have played for both Man City and Liverpool…
Steve McManaman – Liverpool (1990-1999), Man City (2003-2005)
Despite supporting Everton as a child, he joined Liverpool as an apprentice and soon became a fan favourite thanks to his immense skill and workrate.
He played 272 domestic games for Liverpool across nine years, before heading to Real Madrid.
McManaman won both La Liga and the Champions League twice in Madrid, even scoring in the 2000 final.
The winger was also twice voted as the Real Madrid supporters’ favourite player at the club during his tenure.
In 2003 he returned to England to play for Manchester City, making just 35 league appearances.
Robbie Fowler – Liverpool (1993-2001 and 2006-2007), Man City (2003-2006)
Another boyhood Evertonian, Fowler is remembered as one of the Premier League’s most lethal ever strikers.
He netted 120 in 236 domestic matches during his first spell at Anfield and earned the nickname ‘God’.
Fowler then joined City from Leeds United in 2006, where he scored 20 in 80 PL games, but found it hard to dislodge Andy Cole or Darius Vassell from the starting line-up.
After beating Arsenal 4-0 last weekend, the Reds are 31/10 with BetVictor to beat City.
Kolo Toure – Man City (2009-2013), Liverpool (2013-2016)
Joining City in 2009 for £14,000,000 from Arsenal, he went on to lift the Sky Blues’ first ever PL title in 2012.
The Ivory Coast man then moved on a free to Anfield, where he made 46 league appearances.
Daniel Sturridge – Man City (2006-2009), Liverpool (2013-present)
Though blighted by injuries throughout his career, when Sturridge plays, the gifted finisher is capable of creating moments of magic out of nothing.
He didn’t shine at City, but at Liverpool he has blossomed into a great marksman, with a record better than a goal every other game in the Prem.
James Milner – Man City (2010-2015), Liverpool (2015-present)
A versatile and consistent performer, Milner is loved by managers thanks to his work rate and willingness to play anywhere on the park.
Trusted by both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, he has even been given the honour of captaining the Reds.
Raheem Sterling – Liverpool (2012-2015), Man City (2015-present)
After three years with the senior Reds side, in which he broke out, his future became increasingly in doubt as reports surfaced that he wanted out of Anfield.
In 2015, City swooped and signed the winger for an initial fee of £44,000,000.
