Icardi Inter Milan future no longer in doubt
With the Mauro Icardi Inter Milan future no longer in doubt, FootyOn look at the Argentina striker’s club and country career prospects after committing long-term to his current San Siro side.
Icardi has long been linked with a big-money move away from the San Siro after becoming one of Europe’s finest finishers.
The Nerazzurri club captain has been targeted by Premier League sides in recent seasons, including London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea.
But the in-form frontman put pen to paper on a new five-year deal last October and has recently openly outlined his long-term commitment to Inter.
This will be music to head coach Luciano Spalletti’s ears, as he attempts to bring the club back to domestic power.
As of matchday two in Italy’s top-flight, after a brace in his opening two games, Icardi boasted an incredible 82 career goals in 148 outings for Inter.
The clinical South American is therefore a leading 5/2 favourite with betway to secure the Capocannoniere for a second time in his career this season.
Relations mended at San Siro
Despite previously holding a seemingly rocky relationship with the club, Icardi has showed commitment time and time again.
The 24-year-old arrived from Sampdoria back in 2013 and has quickly established himself as a prolific forward in the black and blue ranks.
But things didn’t always look so comfortable, with the Argentine having previously endured a tense fallout with the club’s fans.
This followed a controversial chapter in his autobiography which criticised certain sections of supporters.
It was later removed from the published material, though, and Icardi has appeared to mend his relations within San Siro surroundings.
Wanda Nara, wife and agent of Icardi, admitted that Inter’s treatment of her husband and their determination to retain him have been key to him remaining there.
“They’ve done everything to keep him…”
Nara, also a high-profile Argentine media personality, is delighted with how Inter have treated her husband and client.
The club skipper has started the new campaign brightly and looks likely of helping the Nerazzurri challenge at the table’s summit this term.
“We’ve renewed his contract with Inter three times because, when other clubs have wanted Icardi, they’ve done everything to keep him,” Nara outlined.
“Our relationship with the board is great, especially on a personal level. For example, when the girls were born, the club gave us a lot of gifts.
“As a family, it’s better for us to stay in Milan because the children want to stay there. Aside from that, Mauro’s very happy and he’s also the captain.
“It’s not our intention to leave Milan but, if Mauro changes city for work purposes, of course we’d follow him.”
Finally rewarded with Argentina caps
As well as flourishing at club level with Inter, Icardi’s goalscoring exploits have finally seen him recognised by his nation.
The young frontman had long been overlooked by Argentina, but has recently battled into Jorge Sampaoli’s set-up.
Icardi was involved in the earlier goalless draw with Uruguay and has been granted plenty of action by his national boss of late.
With the World Cup taking place next summer in Russia, Icardi will be keen to continue his fine club form and maintain a strong run in the national side.
Argentina endured a heartbreaking final loss to Germany in 2014 and will aim to lift the biggest honour in football for the first time since 1986 next year.
The South American giants are regarded as 10/1 fourth-favourites to do exactly that with BetVictor, behind Germany, Brazil and Spain.
Having relied heavily on Lionel Messi in recent major tournaments, the rise of clinical attacker Icardi may be a decisive boost for La Albiceleste as they target 2018 success.
