Possible Man City centre back signings
FootyOn experts assess what potential Man City centre back signings Pep Guardiola could make, after revealing the Etihad outfit may be in the market for yet another defender.
Despite already making huge investments this summer in overhauling their rearguard, Manchester City “will try” to sign a centre half before the window closes, according to gaffer Guardiola.
“We don’t have too much more to spend, but we are going to see,” said Guardiola before a pre-season friendly against Spurs.
Why do City need reinforcements for the heart of defence?
Eliaquim Mangala could leave, John Stones is error-prone and Vincent Kompany’s recent fitness record is far from good.
With that in mind, we got thinking about who the Citizens could bring in.
Here are four possible Man City centre back signings this summer…
Guardiola gave former Barcelona and current Borussia Dortmund defender Bartra his senior debut at the Nou Camp.
The Spain international left Catalonia for Germany last summer, but completed the full 90 minutes in less than half (16/34) of his Bundesliga games.
While Bartra notably made four assists during Dortmund routs, he was injured in the midst of a terrorist attack ahead of a Champions League knockout phase tie.
The fallout from that has seen head coach Thomas Tuchel leave the Westfalenstadion and replaced by ex-Ajax boss Peter Bosz.
Dortmund’s new manager has moved Bartra’s compatriot Mikel Merino on loan to Newcastle United.
There has also been substantial defensive recruitment at the club this summer, with Dan-Axel Zagadou arriving from PSG and Omer Toprak bought from Bayer Leverkusen.
Serbia centre back Neven Subotic is back from a loan spell with Cologne too and it leaves defensive options congested.
Bartra is far from guaranteed to be first-choice if he remains with Dortmund, so why not link up with Guardiola again?
The widely reported asking price for Liverpool and France centre back Sakho is £30,000,000.
While the Anfield board and Guardiola’s old rival Jurgen Klopp would surely be loathe to sell him to a Premier League rival, Sakho showed strong promise on loan at Crystal Palace last season.
The Eagles cannot afford a permanent transfer unless former PSG player Sakho were to lower his wage demands considerably.
Money is clearly no object to Man City, though, and BetVictor are 20/1 for them to sign Sakho this summer.
Real Sociedad man Martinez is definitely a Guardiola type player with on-the-ball elegance.
He has been linked with moves away from San Sebastian before, though, and to date remained in his native Basque Country.
Martinez was first linked with Man City in July and would have fellow Spaniard David Silva for company at the Etihad.
Sociedad don’t need to sell, though, having cashed in on left back Yuri Berchiche when PSG came calling.
Virgil van Dijk
Netherlands international Van Dijk doesn’t want to be at Southampton anymore, after reports claim he handed in a transfer request and is now training alone.
The Saints have always been a selling club but, having complained that potential suitors Liverpool tapped the Dutchman up, it is hard to see a resolution involving Anfield.
While that may put Premier League champions Chelsea on alert, they have already signed Antonio Rudiger as a John Terry replacement.
Man City may be able to enter the race for Van Dijk and look overpriced at 25/1 with Sky Bet to get him before September.
