Yorkshire clubs Championship tips: Momentum has changed in promotion race

Yorkshire clubs Championship tips

Quite simply, over the past few years Yorkshire football clubs have let the passionate region down.

Despite being by far the biggest county in terms of size and the second biggest in population (behind just Greater London), there was not one team from ‘God’s Own County’ in the Premier League.

However, since Middlesbrough and Hull City returned to the big time last season, it seems to have caused a knock-on effect.

Three Yorkshire outfits currently occupy the four play-off places, while another is not far off.

Just Rotherham United are the one club without anything to cheer about this term, as they sit rock bottom and destined for the drop.

But, with much else to be positive about, FootyOn writers pick out a number of Yorkshire clubs Championship tips for punters to potentially profit from…

Clubs are in table order

Huddersfield Town (4th – 55 points)

Huddersfield now look set to be top Yorkshire team in the Championship.

After stopping high-flying West Yorkshire rivals Leeds United in mid-soar at the weekend, beating them 2-1, the Terriers are back to being Yorkshire’s top dog in the division.

Huddersfield are now in fourth place and just a point off Reading in second with a game in hand.

So, you’d expect them to keep pushing on having now firmly overcome their October-early December slump.

It seems now that momentum has changed in the race with Leeds for promotion, and there are still some tasty Terriers odds available.

Being six points off the top two, automatic promotion might just be out of reach at 8/1 with BetVictor.

Huddersfield are a tempting 11/4 to be promoted. And a great 5/1 price with Sky Bet to win the play-offs.

There is also great value in a special Sky Bet ‘Championship without Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion’ market at 2/1.

Leeds United (5th – 54 points)

Leeds are still firmly in with a shout of gaining promotion via the play-offs.

Onto Leeds who, up until Sunday, looked like nothing could stop them.

Garry Monk has worked wonders with a team that has not had the same financial power as clubs around them in the table.

The Whites are still in a great position in the play-offs but, after now losing twice to Huddersfield this season, would they fancy beating them to gain promotion?

Leeds are still 3/1 with Ladbrokes to finally return to the Premier League. They are 9/2 favourites with Sky Bet, meanwhile, to win the play-offs.

Or, you can back them at 10/3 to be top Championship team – not including the Magpies and Seagulls.

Sheffield Wednesday (6th – 49 points)

The Owls feature in our Yorkshire clubs Championship tips.

Of the Yorkshire clubs in the play-off places, the Wednesday’s position looks the most precarious as they have just a three point cushion.

Norwich City below them have three wins on the trot too.

So, the Owls will really need to start picking up the pace.

We don’t think there is any chance of them gaining promotion this season.

However, they are a best price of 5/6 with bet365 to remain in the play-offs.

Barnsley (9th – 45 points)

Can Barnsley make a final push and qualify for the play-offs?

With five wins in their last 10 league matches, Barnsley could definitely rival Norwich by replacing Wednesday in the play-offs.

They have played a game more than both teams, but there is still plenty of time.

The Tykes are a very tempting 40/1 price with bet365 to finish in the play-offs.

Surely worth a quid or two punt?

Barnsley are an even bigger 150/1 shout to win promotion. We think this is very unlikely, however.

Rotherham United (24th – 16 points)

Rotherham look down and out, but also feature in our Yorkshire clubs Championship tips.

Last and certainly least, Rotherham are now pretty much planning for life in League One.

With just 16 points from 30 games, and 15 points from safety, it seems worth a punt piling on your money with the very few bookies that still offer odds on their relegation.

William Hill say they are 1/250 to go down.

They may be still slightly unsure, given that Rotherham made a remarkable escape last season too.

However, they did have the magic man himself and typical tenacious Yorkshireman Neil Warnock in charge at the time.
