What are the pros and cons of these potential Neymar replacements for Barcelona?
FootyOn experts assess the pros and cons of seven possible Neymar replacements following the Brazil star’s world record move from Barcelona to PSG.
They say marquee signings are becoming one of football’s biggest cliches, but Neymar has just made himself precisely that.
The Brazil forward has just completed an eye-watering £200,000,000 move from Barca to mega-rich French Ligue 1 club PSG.
Never find the Financial Fair Play implications, it leaves a void to fill at the Nou Camp.
Ernesto Valverde and the Barca board must weigh up the pros and cons of these potential Neymar replacements, though…
Liverpool and Brazil star Coutinho was linked with Barcelona before the need for Neymar replacements arose.
This Kop idol is capable of the spectacular and reached double figures for the first time in the Premier League last term.
For all his silky skills and long-range efforts, Coutinho doesn’t have the best fitness record and flopped when joining Inter Milan at a young age.
Borussia Dortmund and France forward Dembele is a highly-rated young talent that scored 10 and made 21 goals in all competitions last term.
Rumours linking Dembele to the Nou Camp also first surfaced before Neymar left.
He is just one year into a five-year deal in Dortmund, however, and the least proven goalscorer on our list.
Juventus and Argentina attacker Dybala played alongside compatriot Messi in national coach Jorge Sampaoli’s first game in charge, a 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Brazil.
They have dovetailed nicely for their country, so why not make the arrangement at club level too?
The only fly in the ointment with this option is the contract extension Dybala signed in Turin back in April.
Atletico Madrid and France forward Griezmann is a proven La Liga performer with 100 goals in 252 top-flight games.
He has also scored 20 or more across all competitions in each of the last four seasons.
Griezmann has just penned a new deal with Atleti, though, having resisted overtures from Manchester United.
Belgium star Hazard has inspired Chelsea to two Premier League titles and was previously linked with Real Madrid.
Now that Barcelona have money for Neymar replacements, however, could they emerge as a destination?
The one concern with this player is how his form tailed off badly the season before last when things weren’t going well.
Angel Di Maria
Having played for Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United and now PSG, Argentina’s Di Maria has plenty of experience at big clubs.
While he has a La Liga title on his CV, plus Copa del Rey successes and a Champions League triumph during his days at the Bernabeu, Di Maria is not a prolific goalscorer.
What he lacks in front of goal is more than made up for in assists, though, as Di Maria average setting one up for a teammate every other game in La Liga (62 in 124).
Monaco and France teenage talent Mbappe is the in-demand player in the transfer window.
Getting so much money from PSG means Barcelona could reinvest by entering the race and secure him as one of the possible Neymar replacements.
Whether they will want to put all their eggs in one basket, while other European heavyweights chase Mbappe remains to be seen.
