Kevin Phillips odds among next Sunderland manager tips
FootyOn give next Sunderland manager tips, following Simon Grayson’s sacking from the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are now seeking a sixth permanent boss in just over four years after Grayson was axed following a 3-3 draw with fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers.
Sunderland sit in the Championship’s relegation zone on just 10 points from 15 games and also went down from the Premier League last term.
Fans of the Wearside outfit have known little joy in recent years and face yet another scrap for survival.
So, read on for our next Sunderland manager tips. All prices quoted are from BetVictor.
Kevin Phillips odds appeal
‘Super Kev’ is a genuine Black Cats legend, having played over 200 times for them and scoring 130 goals in all competitions.
His Sunderland performances in the late 1990s led to a maiden England call-up in 1999, and he was top Premier League marksman that season with 30.
The former striker’s partnership up front with ex-Black Cats chairman and brief boss Niall Quinn was among the club’s best memories in modern times.
Phillips is yet to take charge of a team, but has had plenty of coaching experience and what better to begin a career as a manager than going back to your old club?
He has been on the coaching staff of Leicester and now Derby County – both under Nigel Pearson at some stage.
While, he has also been an assistant for Paul Clement, Steve McClaren and now Gary Rowett at Pride Park too.
Appointing the one-time Sunderland star would definitely get fans back onside and Kevin Phillips odds are a 6/1 fancy after being the early favourite.
Peter Reid bets emerge as gamble
Former Black Cats boss Reid has thrown his hat into the ring in a bid to pick the club up off its knees.
During his seven-and-a-half years in charge of Sunderland (1995-2002), he kept them in the old Division One before steering them into the Premier League twice.
While there may be plenty of clamour for nostalgia among supporters, a concern would be Reid hasn’t managed at second tier level since the 2004/05 season.
Indeed, he has only coached sporadically since that stint with Coventry City – taking charge of the Thailand national team (2008-09), Plymouth Argyle (2010-11), Indian Super League outfit Mumbai City (2014) and briefly as Bolton assistant (2016).
A gamble has emerged, however, on Peter Reid bets in this market and his price has halved into 4/1.
Aitor Karanka also attracts support
Ex-Middlesbrough manager Karanka stabilised one of Sunderland’s local rivals after a steady decline under Gordon Strachan and got them into the Premier League.
The Basque-born Spaniard was sacked from The Riverside outfit in March, but has since said that he intends to stay in England rather than return to his homeland, and he wouldn’t have to relocate.
Links to a local rival may do him no favours with Black Cats fans, but Karanka has proven he can turn a team in this league around.
As with Peter Reid bets, there has been strong support for the Jose Mourinho’s one-time assistant at Real Madrid.
Karanka is now 2/1 favourite (from 6/1) to take Sunderland on.
