2017/18 Champions League Group C tips: Atletico Madrid odds better value than Chelsea bets
FootyOn give 2017/18 Champions League Group C tips, with Atletico Madrid odds reckoned better value than Chelsea bets in the outright win market.
Last season’s Premier League winners Chelsea return to Champions League football knowing they are betway’s 11/10 favourites to top the pool.
They have never defeated main Group C rivals Atletico Madrid during Diego Simeone’s reign, though.
Another curious stat, however, is Simeone has yet to beat the Blues at home.
As they move into their new stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano, Atleti have an opportunity to change that.
Extra spice surrounds Atletico and Chelsea’s encounter in Madrid on September 27 because of Diego Costa.
Costa one of many connections between clubs
The Brazil-born Spain striker is beloved at Atleti after firing them to La Liga title glory in 2013/14 and wants to return.
Blues boss Antonio Conte told Costa he wasn’t part of his plans for this season.
That prompted the Chelsea frontman to go AWOL as he tried to force a return to Atletico through.
Simeone’s side are banned from registering players until January, however, leaving Costa in limbo.
Besides him, Belgium goalie Thibaut Courtois, Brazil left back Filipe Luis and ex-Spain striker Fernando Torres have played for both clubs in the last four years.
Given the disappointing transfer deadline day Conte had, missing out on Ross Barkley, Fernando Llorente and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, their last-gasp swoops for Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater look hasty.
Drinkwater deal cannot derail Atleti
The latter reprising his Premier League title-winning midfield partnership with ex-Leicester City colleague N’Golo Kante at the Blues has some merit, though.
Atleti, meanwhile, have proved hugely consistent in Europe – reaching the Champions League quarter-finals or better in each of the last four seasons.
Since Chelsea lifted the European Cup in 2012, they’ve made it past the same stage just once when losing in the semis to Atletico in 2014.
It may be that Simeone has the Blues’ number then.
Having steered Atleti to top four consecutive Champions League groups, Chelsea bets thus lack value and merit.
Atletico Madrid odds of 11/8 with BetVictor, however, do appeal as a punt to win this pool.
Rebuilding Roma, Qarabag not ready to challenge
Roma are also in Group C, but – like Chelsea sans John Terry – have experienced the end of an era with Francesco Totti retiring.
The Giallorossi have also changed coach with Eusebio Di Francesco getting his first big job in management.
Change in the Eternal City is customary nowadays, but replacing star winger Mohamed Salah in attack and key defender Antonio Rudiger, who joined the Blues, is a tough ask.
While nobody other than Blues legend Terry has netted against Roma since 1965, they have plenty to find to compete with Chelsea and Atletico.
Qarabag of Kazakhstan complete Group C as first-time qualifiers for this phase of the Champions League.
Lengthy trips to the Asian frontier look unlikely to cause too much inconvenience.
