Champions League Group A preview: Man Utd firm favourites

2017/18 Champions League Group A tips: Man Utd bets a banker to top pool

FootyOn give 2017/18 Champions League Group A tips and Man Utd bets appeal in a pool that shouldn’t trouble Jose Mourinho’s men.

Manchester United getting a kind draw is nothing new and their Champions League group is no different this year.

The Red Devils’ pool sees them play CSKA Moscow, Benfica and Basel.

None of those opponents should give Mourinho much trouble, so Man Utd bets at 4/9 with betway for an outright win make sense.

Given their acquisitions of Belgium frontman Romelu Lukaku and Serbia anchorman Nemanja Matic, United are worthy Group A favourites.

They have also weakened Portuguese Primeira Liga champions Benfica by buying Sweden defender Victor Lindelof.

Best of Benfica bought

United aren’t the only ones to raid Lisbon’s Stadium of Light this summer either.

As Benfica sold Victor Lindelof, Man Utd bets appeals among 2017/18 Champions League Group A tips.

Rivals Manchester City snapped up first-choice goalie Ederson Moraes and Barcelona bought right back Nelson Semedo.

Former Fulham flop and Greece striker Kostas Mitroglu was sold to Marseille and Peru winger Andre Carrillo is on loan at Watford.

It’s a big ask for Benfica to be competitive when they’ve lost so much.

Rui Vitoria has made a couple of eye-catching attacking additions, however, in Switzerland striker Haris Seferovic and Gabriel Barbosa.

The latter is on loan from Inter Milan and joins a strong Brazilian flavour that is familiar to Benfica’s squad.

Basel and CSKA Moscow not what they once were

Swiss Super League champions Basel, meanwhile, have replaced Austria’s Marc Janko with Ricky van Wolfswinkel up front.

Remember Ricky van Wolfswinkel? He plays for Basel now, but Man Utd bets are fancied among 2017/18 Champions League Group A tips.

The Netherlands international was hugely disappointing when on Norwich City’s books, so don’t read too much into his early season form.

Basel have been a thorn in Premier League teams’ sides before, but look much diminished under Raphael Wicky.

You can say the same about CSKA Moscow, who still boast Sergei Ignashevich and the Berezutski brothers in defence.

Given the stagnation of the Russian Premier League side, lack of depth at Basel and change at Benfica, the pool is United’s to lose.

Man Utd bets may be at an odds-on price, but they simply look head and shoulders above their Group A rivals.
